Biography

A student of Michel Martin Drolling, he made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1845, exhibiting only portraits until 1848, which failed to attract the attention of Théophile Gautier.

After the Louis XV Theatre was destroyed by fire in 1856, he executed allegorical figures representing Poetry, Music, Fame, and the Genius of the Arts.

According to the Goncourt brothers, he embodied the fashionable Rococo style of the Second Empire.

He received a silver medal in 1870 and was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour.

He died on April 9, 1893, in his hometown.
