Gabriel Biessy 1854-1935

Overview

Born in 1854, Gabriel Biessy began his training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon as a student of Félix Clément before entering Carolus-Duran’s studio in Paris in 1879. He submitted his first portraits to the Salon in 1882, then embarked on a series of travels to the Netherlands, Portugal, Senegal, and above all South America. A painter–traveler, he ended his career as Director of Fine Arts in Cairo. His work consists primarily of portraits, views of Paris, and American and Parisian genre scenes, depicting the life of his time with a particular fondness for nocturnal settings.
