Jan Toorop was born on the island of Java, in what was then the Dutch East Indies. He studied in Delft and Amsterdam at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, which allowed him to develop a style blending Javanese motifs with Symbolism and featuring elongated, curvilinear figures that anticipate Art Nouveau. His Art Nouveau period spans from 1891 to 1899. He was a member of the Groupe des XX from 1884 and exhibited in 1900 and 1902 in Vienna alongside artists of the Secession.
His works are held in major museums and important collections worldwide.
