Antoine Charles Cazanave 1883-1954
Antoine-Charles Cazanave was born on 17 February 1883 in Carcassonne into a family of artists. His brother, Antoine Delzers, was also a printmaker. Active as both a painter and a sculptor, Cazanave is nonetheless best known for his work in pastel, a medium in which he excelled and through which he developed a rich and distinctive repertoire. He is chiefly recognized for his Orientalist scenes, set either indoors or outdoors, populated by nude, languid female figures.
The female figure recurs throughout his oeuvre and is frequently associated with the image of the femme fatale - seductive, tempting, and sensuous, most often depicted nude.
Cazanave exhibited in Paris at the most important salons of his time, including the Salon of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and the Salon des Artistes Français.
